The Value of Generic ccTLDs Skip to main.

HEXONET offers one of the widest selection of country-code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) in the marketplace. As a domain reseller, it is good practice to regularly review the TLDs you offer and consider new ones you might want to add. Since the domain industry is constantly evolving and there are important trends to pay attention to, this will influence what TLDs to emphasize and market to your customer base.

Typically, generic TLDs (gTLDs) are intended for a broad set of users. ccTLDs on the other hand are more targeted towards specific locations. When it comes to international SEO, ccTLDs also play a critical role in showing search engines and users where a website originates. One of Google's top priorities may be to serve up content that is most relevant to its users. Let's take an example of someone living in Vancouver, Canada, who searches local craft beer pubs. They typically will not want to be served up results for craft beer pubs in Australia. Therefore, Google may most likely favor those domain names that utilize the Canadian .CA ccTLD.

One group of ccTLDs that have particular ultility and value are ccTLDs promoted and used beyond the original country-based intentions.  The classic example of one is the .TV domain name, for the nation of Tuvalu, which is now universally used by in the realm of television and broadcasting.  Lets take a closer look at the most popular of these ccTLDs.

.TV:   .TV's original roots are as the ccTLD for the tiny South Pacific island nation of Tuvalu. Keep in mind that Tuvalu only has 10,000 inhabitants yet this ccTLD has gone mainstream. Operated by Verisign, it has evolved into the ideal place to showcase your video and broadcast-related content on the web. Examples include ustream.tv (provides video streaming services to more than 80 million viewers and broadcasters), ufc.tv (where UFC subscribers can buy and stream live and archived events) and twitch.tv (a live streaming video platform owned by Twitch Interactive, a subsidiary of Amazon.com)

.CO: This is the official ccTLD of Colombia. However, it is commonly recognized to identify a ‘company’ or ‘corporation’.  Short, memorable and credible.  .CO is the domain name of choice for innovators and entrepreneurs all over the world.  Examples include t.co (Twitter uses this as their main URL link shortener service), angel.co (a community of startups and investors who make fund-raising efficient), kernel.co (an innovative startup focusing on Human Intelligence solutions; recently raised $100 million USD)

.IO:  This ccTLD is assigned to the British Indian Ocean Territory. However, it has also been treated as a shortened version of “Input/Output” and has become one of the hottest domain extensions for startups, tech and software development companies. Examples include Soup.io (a popular Austrian social networking and microblogging site), Filecloud.io (a free cloud storage and content delivery site) and Codepen.io (a front end developer playground and code editor).

.FM: This is the ccTLD for the Federated States of Micronesia, an independent island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. This extension has been gaining popularity among FM radio stations, media broadcast companies, and musicians. Examples include Ask.fm (one of the world's biggest social Q&A networks with over 150 million users), Last.fm (Online music catalog with free music streaming, videos, photos, lyrics, charts, artist biographies, concerts and internet radio) and Carrieunderwood.fm (the official Carrie Underwood Fan Club) and Brain.fm (music to improve focus, meditation & sleep)

.ME: This is the ccTLD for Montenegro. It is also popularly used for personal websites, blogs and social media to assert a personal persona online that will stand out. Examples include About.me (a platform for representing personal identity online. The service allows users to create and maintain a curated page for self-expression), M.me (Facebook recently introduced  Messenger Links, which businesses can use to make it fast and easy for people to start a message thread with them. Messenger Links use a Page’s username to create a short and memorable link (m.me/username) that, when clicked, opens a conversation with the business in Messenger) and Grapevine.me (a Youtube influence marketing tool).

All of the above ccTLDs have no restrictions, meaning anyone can register them (please note that some ccTLDs have very strict eligibility requirements). Google actually considers these ccTLDs as gTLDs, which gives them the same ranking as regular gTLDs. Please see the complete list of these ccTLDs on Google's website.
